Coventry Linked With Wolves Midfielder

Coventry City have been linked with a loan move for Wolves midfielder Connor Ronan, ahead of the opening of the transfer window next month. However, is the rumour legit, what sort of player is he and what would he bring to the club moving forward?

The Rumour

The rumour was posted by journalist Mike Keegan, who stated that Coventry were in a race alongside Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City, Aberdeen and Hibernian for midfielder Connor Ronan from Premier League side Wolves.

Keegan is a reliable source and has proven to get transfer rumours right over the years, however the only issue I have with this deal is the fact that so many clubs have been linked. Therefore, it appears as though this could be more of a newspaper story rather than anything more serious. However, Ronan fits perfectly into Coventry’s business plan which adds credibility to the story.

Who Is Connor Ronan & What Sort Of Player Is He?

Connor Ronan is a 24-year-old English born, Irish midfielder and a product of the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy. He broke through in 2017, and was immediately loaned out to Portsmouth and then Walsall. He also had loan spells abroad, playing for Dunajska Streda in Slovakia as well as Grasshoppers in Switzerland. These spells were in between a brief stint at Blackpool in 2020. However, it was last season where he really stood out, whilst on loan at Scottish Premiership side St. Mirren where he scored eight goals in 30 appearances from midfield.

Ronan is a typical attacking central midfielder, very similar to current Skyblues midfielder Jamie Allen. The only difference is that Allen has more experience at a higher level, however Ronan has made an appearance in the Premier League this season for Wolves, during a league match against Brighton, as a late substitute. He would likely be an option off the bench to begin with, due to the form of Jamie Allen, but he could also compete for a place alongside Callum O’Hare and Kasey Palmer too.

Financial Side Of Things

The 24-year-old is currently under contract at Wolves until June 2024. This means that despite being free to leave, his transfer would require a fee if it was a permanent switch to one of the five teams linked with his services. Unless he was to be loaned out until the end of the season. It is therefore, unlikely that Wolves would cancel his contract.

The Skyblues ‘May’ have money to spend in January depending on various other deals elsewhere for some of the clubs fringe players, or the Doug King takeover being approved at last. The fee itself wouldn’t be too high, with a deal of roughly £500,000 potentially being enough to land the midfielder, especially with him being out of favour and unlikely to ever break through at Molineux.

Is the deal realistic?

Connor Ronan is a player that would definitely be affordable for the Skyblues if we were ever to make a move for the midfielder. He is also the right age to fit the clubs business model. However, I get the impression this could be more of a newspaper rumour, with his agent trying to attract interest in order to make them and the player more money. I would certainly welcome him at Coventry and he would provide strong competition within the squad, but I would take this with a pinch of salt until someone with a better knowledge behind the scenes says otherwise.
